A comforting breakfast casserole made with croissants, sausage, and a creamy custard, perfect for brunch gatherings.
Ingredients
- 1.25 lb croissants, cut into 1-inch chunks
- 0.8 lb sausage
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1/2 red pepper, finely chopped
- 1/2 green pepper, finely chopped
- 8 eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1.25 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups gruyere cheese
- 1 tsp salt
- 0.75 tsp pepper
- 0.25 tsp garlic powder
- 0.25 tsp smoked paprika
- 1.5 tbsp unsalted butter
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat, add sausage, and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add chopped onion, red pepper, and green pepper; sauté for about 5 minutes until soft.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika.
- In a baking dish, layer croissant chunks, then sprinkle cooked sausage and vegetables, followed by gruyere cheese.
- Pour the egg mixture over the layers, soaking all croissant pieces.
- Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.
- In the morning, bake for 40-45 minutes until golden brown and set.
- Let cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
Serve with a fresh side salad or fruit platter for a complete meal. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days or freeze for longer storage.
