Description

A warm and hearty casserole combining biscuits, sausage, and cheese – perfect for breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup finely shredded cheddar (optional)
  • 1 pound ground breakfast sausage (pork or turkey)
  • 1/4 cup plain all-purpose flour
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
  • 1 (16-ounce) container of refrigerated buttermilk biscuit dough (8 biscuits total)
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Nonstick spray for preparing the baking dish
  • 1/2 cup milk (for blending with eggs)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and coat a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, crumble and brown the sausage until cooked, keeping the fat in the pan.
  3. Dust the browned sausage with flour, then gradually add 2 1/2 cups of milk, stirring constantly until thickened (5 to 7 minutes). Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Cut each biscuit into four pieces and distribute them in the baking dish.
  5. Pour the sausage gravy over the biscuit pieces.
  6. Whisk eggs, 1/2 cup of milk, and seasonings in a bowl, folding in cheddar if using, and pour over the gravy.
  7. Bake uncovered for 35 to 40 minutes, until golden and firm in the center.
  8. Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing and serving warm.
